Alumni Council News October 2011

Fellow classmates: The next session of the Dartmouth Alumni Council (DAC) is scheduled for December 1-3. The purpose of the DAC is not only to convey news of the college back to the individual classes but also to give alums the opportunity to express concerns they may have about the college. If you have any such concerns, please let me know so that I may raise them during the meeting.

To give you some ideas, here are a few topics that were covered during the previous session last May and listed in Axel Grabowsky’s report to you:

  • Athletic facilities
  • Irresponsible drinking
  • $100 million budget gap
  • 1,500 to 2,000 courses and curriculum review
  • Reunions
  • Composition of the Board of Trustees
  • Academic Calendar
  • Commitment of the College to recruit and retain minority faculty

I have been assigned to the Enrollment and Admissions Committee of the DAC and so would be particularly interested in issues related to that area. For example and again quoting Axel: Harvard and Princeton recently announced that with the Class of 2016 they will reinstitute an early admissions system. Dartmouth’s Dean of Admissions, Maria Laskaris, does not expect that decision to affect the College’s early admissions program. (For more details, see The Dartmouth of February 28, 2011, also posted on our class website: )

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at Homecoming.
